Check the Price

Editor and sole maintainer of Check the Price. Records what VPNs advertise, bill and charge at renewal — and writes about nothing else.

I record prices. That is the whole job, and it is narrower than it sounds — because a price in this category is not one number but four: what is advertised, what is charged today, what is charged next year, and what the terms allow the company to change in between.

Most of what is written about VPNs answers a different question: which one is best. I do not think that question has a stable answer, and I do not think a ranked list is an honest way to present one. So this site sorts instead of ranks, dates instead of asserts, and leaves holes where the data does not exist.

I buy the subscriptions myself. I read the checkout screens. I keep the receipts, and where a provider publishes an audit report, I read the scope section rather than the summary. When something changes, the record shows the change and the date — not a silent edit.

The only claim I make about myself

I have no relationship with any provider beyond an affiliate link, and no provider has ever seen an entry before it was published.

What I write, and what I refuse to

I write: price records, renewal arithmetic, refund-window comparisons, audit indexes, and the occasional piece about how a term was worded before and after it changed.

I refuse to write: speed rankings I cannot reproduce on your connection, "best of" lists that require me to weigh things I cannot measure, and any sentence that starts with "typically" when a number is what is needed.

Corrections and disagreements are welcome and usually useful. If a figure here does not match what you see at checkout, that is exactly the kind of thing worth reporting — see the contact page.
