Record #004 · Procedure
Cancelling is not
refunding. Know which
one you need.
One stops the next charge. The other returns the money you already paid. Doing the wrong one, in the wrong order, is how people lose a term they never used.
Cancelling ends the automatic renewal. It leaves the current term running, and it does not return any money. If you want money back inside the refund window, that is a separate request — and cancelling first does not help you get it.
Most people who feel they were charged unfairly actually did one of two things: they cancelled inside the refund window and assumed that was enough, or they cancelled in the wrong place — usually the provider's website, for a subscription that was sold by an app store.
| You want | What to do | Deadline | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stop the next charge | Cancel auto-renewal in the account portal | Before the renewal date | Term runs to its end, no further billing |
| Get this term refunded | Open a refund request with support | Inside the window | Money returned; access usually ends on approval |
| Both | Refund first, then confirm auto-renew is off | Inside the window | The only sequence that leaves nothing open |
| Stop an app-store charge | Cancel in the store's subscription settings | Before the store bills | The provider's own page cannot stop it |
The order that works
Find out who
actually charged you
Look at the line item on your statement. If it names the platform rather than the provider, the subscription lives in that store and must be cancelled there.
Decide which
window you are in
Inside the refund window, ask for money back. Past it, cancelling is the only option and the current term is spent.
Act a week
early, not a day
Billing can be triggered before the nominal end date, and it can happen at a weekend. A week of margin costs you nothing and removes the whole category of "it already renewed".
Keep the
confirmation
Screenshot the confirmation screen and the date. When a charge is disputed six weeks later, this is the only document that matters.
Cancelling auto-renewal feels like closing the account. It is not. The service stays live until the term ends, and no money moves in either direction.
After you cancel
Two things are worth checking rather than assuming. First, that auto-renew is genuinely off — some flows cancel the plan but leave a payment method on file for a future purchase. Second, that you received an email confirming the cancellation; if the flow never sent one, take a screenshot instead.
If a charge appears after you cancelled and you have the confirmation, the sequence is: contact the provider with the screenshot, then the card issuer. The screenshot is what turns a disagreement into an obvious error.
